Why should you measure your race course ?

Hello, dear running friend!

If you’re reading this article, you’re probably organizing a race, or part of a sports club, or simply curious why everyone keeps talking about “measured and certified courses.”
Well, let’s take a closer look at why officially measuring a race course is not just a formality, but an investment in the integrity, safety, and future of your event.

What does an officially measured course mean?

In short, an officially measured course is a race whose distance has been verified using a special instrument called a Jones Counter, mounted on a bicycle and calibrated with millimetric precision.
The measurement is performed by a World Athletics / AIMS accredited measurer, following an international protocol to ensure that the advertised distance (for example, 10 km, half marathon, or marathon) is exact.

In other words, if your course is certified, runners can be confident that when they cross the finish line after 10 km, they have run exactly 10 km (since it’s difficult for runners to follow the perfect racing line, their GPS watch will usually show a bit more).
And that makes a huge difference for anyone who wants to run accurately and compare their results with other races around the world.

Safety and fairness for runners

A measured course means, first and foremost, trust.
Runners come to a race to test their limits and to know exactly what performance they achieved.
When they know the course is officially measured, they can rely on their results.
No debates, no doubts — every participant has covered the announced distance, each on their own line.

In addition, the measurement process provides essential safety information.
In the measurement report, the organizer receives precise details about:

  • where exactly the start and finish must be placed,
  • which turning points must be clearly marked,
  • and how the course should be delimited to avoid confusion.

In practice, the report becomes a complete technical guide, helping you fine-tune every meter of your race.

From a local race to a recognized competition

A measured course turns a local race into an officially recognized event.
Once you have World Athletics / AIMS certification, your race gains international credibility.
Results can be used for qualifications, records, rankings, or even national team selections.

And yes — this also means something fantastic:
👉 athletes can come to your race to qualify for European or World Championships.

Since 2022, World Athletics has made it clear:
only performances achieved on officially measured and certified courses can be used for qualification to major international championships.

So if your course is certified, you automatically become an attractive destination for elite athletes, not just for amateurs.

National championships and official events

Another major advantage is that national championships can be organized only on officially measured courses.
That means if your sports club is affiliated with the Athletics Federation, you are eligible to host official competitions recognized in the Federations calendar.

This is a huge step for any organizer who wants to move from the local level to the national or even international stage.

Global visibility through AIMS

Once your course is certified, you can become a member of AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races).
This gives you the unique opportunity to list your event in the official AIMS calendar, alongside famous marathons like Berlin, London, Tokyo, or Boston.

What does this mean in practice?

  • Your event appears on the AIMS website, visible to thousands of international runners.
  • You can attract foreign participants and sports tourists.
  • You raise your city’s prestige as a running destination.
  • And, not least, you become part of a global community of professional race organizers.
  • (Note: There is an annual membership fee to be part of AIMS.)

What you receive after measurement

After each official measurement, the organizer receives:

  1. The official course measurement report, detailing exact measurements, key points, and organizational recommendations. Upon request, it can also include the precise locations of kilometer markers. This report is valid for 5 years, as long as the route remains unchanged.
  2. The World Athletics / AIMS Distance Certificate, officially confirming the exact course length.
  3. The “World Athletics Measured Course” badge, which you can display on your website, posters, and promotional materials.

These documents are clear proof that your event meets the highest international standards — giving runners confidence, and giving your race the professional recognition it deserves.

I started measuring courses out of necessity, when, during the S24H ultramarathon, we decided to organize the European 24-Hour Running Championship in Timișoara, in 2018.
Since then, I’ve measured several courses, and together with race organizers, we can offer athletes routes where they can truly test their limits.

I speak Romanian, English, Hungarian, and a bit of German
